Das Fremdwort steht einerseits für »Abscheu, Widerwille«, andererseits für »Entsetzen, angsterfüllter Zustand«, wobei das Wort je nach Bedeutung auf zwei unterschiedlichen Wegen ins Deutsche gelangt ist. In beiden Bedeutungen geht es letztlich aber doch auf dasselbe Etymon zurück, nämlich auf lat. horror »das Zusammenfahren, das Sichaufsträuben, der Schauder«. Dieses bedeutet in der Sprache der röm. Ärzte auch »Fieberschauder, Schüttelfrost«. In dieser Bedeutung hat es die medizinische Fachsprache über die Jahrhunderte bewahrt. Im 18. Jh. wird es als erneute Übernahme aus dem Lat. im Sinne von »Schauder, Abscheu« gebräuchlich; eine Bedeutung, die im heutigen Deutsch z. B. in der Fügung »vor etw. einen Horror haben« zutage tritt. In der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.s taucht »Horror« noch in einer weiteren, leicht unterschiedlichen Bedeutung auf. Im Sinne von »schreckerfüllter Zustand, Entsetzen« handelt es sich um eine direkte Übernahme aus gleichbed. engl. horror, welches über afrz. (h)orrour ebenfalls auf lat. horror zurückgeht. In dieser zweiten Bedeutung findet es sich häufig in Zusammensetzungen wie
Horrortrip oder Horrorfilm.
